I've heard a lot of people including the not so annonymous "Decided" voter on here claiming that we all need to be hyper worried about the liberal agenda of rampant redistribution of wealth and how the tax policies of Democrats are really going to lead us down the wrong path. And how specifically Barack O'Bama as the most liberal candidate is going to tax the hell out of all of us and the economy is going to suffer for it while small businesses drown under the yolking burden.
To begin with I agree with the statement that Joe Biden made about taxes. Paying your taxes IS the most patriotic thing that most Americans can do. Taxes go to education, the go to infrastrucutre, the go to fund the military and the people that run our commonwealths and keep our towns safe. Now that doesn't necessarily mean that we should pay for more than we ought to. But there is nothing fundamentally wrong with the notion of paying taxes. Unless you plan on seceeding from the Union like that party in Alaska, then guess what, you need to pay taxes. It's really about finding the right balance.
But one of the truisms about American politics is that Republicans always try to paint the picture that Democrats want this irresponsible freedom to start writing checks and that this is fundamentally going to crash the economy while they instead believe in a trickle-down philosophy of investing in businesses which will grow jobs and eventually main street will benefit. One big issue with this though is that as a business owner you can buy your supplies or labor force from a country with lower prices or lower minimum wages. So those dollars don't come back to Americans. The second and potentially bigger issue is that more often than not, when Republicans have lowered taxes to stimulate the economy, they have spent WAY beyond their means.
I find it humorous that Republican are often trying to paint the picture that their tax philosophy is fundamentally sounder than Democrats when in fact if you look at the budget practices of Reagan, George Bush and George W Bush, they have WAY outspent Democrats. Take a look at the following chart which shows the correlation between the national debt and GDP.
Every president following WWII until Reagan spent less than we made so our debt dropped, pulling us out of the debt we created to fight that war. Then Reagan and Bush came in and reduced taxes but spent WAY beyond what they should have and the National debt skyrocketed. Clinton tried to reverse things and made some headway but George W came in and turned it right back around. We're literally at a point right now where our debt almost matches what we make every year. This is the equivalent of your salary equaling your minimum credit card payment.
So no offense folks, but no Republican out there is going to fool me by saying that the Democratic tax philosophy is wrong. It's your out of control spending that got us where we are today.
